I finally decided to tackle a large canvas I’d been moving around my studio for some time. What could be more fun than creating patterns and textures from swimming fish and choppy water, right? Inspired by John 21:11, I attempted to paint my version of “153 Fish.” As it turns out, it’s really hard to keep count of all those fish. I tried a few styles and a few attempts at keeping track unsuccessfully before settling on collage as the best way to tackle the subject.
…the painting became less about the fish and more about the Light…
It often takes me a few twists and turns to get my bearing within a painting. In that time, God begins to break down my initial ideas and speak to my heart. In this case, the painting became less about the fish and more about the Light of God, filtering down to the depths of our darkest selves. The “dawn from on high” is always ready to break upon us!
